i can't say if that's gonna implemented in the new version of FireAlpaca but will have to wait and see. but, yeah i still had to work with two programs again except i had to animate and recently color it in FireAlpaca, save it as a PSD file than add the finishing touches in GIMP and save it as a GIF, because you can not save your animation as a Gif within FireAlpaca. when you start a new layer it temporary turns your previous layer into a red or green color when your not working with that said previous layer. but, the onion skinning of the feature works very well.
